    The Tournament
    --------------

Europe's most prestigious club tournament, the Champions League,
consisted of all winners in league championships throughout
Europe plus league runners-up from the top eight UEFA-ranked
national leagues (England, France, Spain, Germany, Italy,
Netherlands, Portugal and Turkey). Two preliminary qualifying
rounds were played in a home-and-away format where aggregate
goals determined the winner. The field was reduced to 24 teams,
which were placed in six groups of four teams.

After the round-robin play, group winners and two teams with the
best second-place records advanced to the quarterfinal round. At
the quarterfinal and semifinal stages, the format returned to
    home-and-away.
