#Event Description and Format -- Equestrian#
--------------------------------------------
In the Olympic equestrian competition, individuals and teams
contend in dressage, show jumping and a three-day event.
The dressage competition requires the rider to put the horse
through a number of movements, and points are awarded for the
proper execution of each.
Show jumping has each rider and horse go through two rounds with
fault points assessed if obstacles are knocked over or if the
horse does not attempt a jump and obstacle. The round is based
on a time limit, with penalty points given if the time limit is
exceeded. In the event of tie, a jump-off is conducted.
The three-day event contains three parts -- the dressage,
endurance and show jumping. The dressage and jumping follow the
same basic rules as regular dressage and jumping. The endurance
portion is a long distance obstacle run broken down into four
parts -- two "road and tracks," one "steeplechase" and one
"cross-country." Penalty points are assesed for falls and
failing to complete the run in the required time limit, with
bonus points given if the rider completes the run within the
alloted time.
The competition runs from September 16-October 1 at Sydney's
Equestrian Center.
