#Event Description and Format -- Canoe/Kayak#

The Olympic canoe/kayak disciplines are divided between
flatwater competition, which features 12 events, and four
whitewater events. 

The flatwater competition, set for the Sydney International
Regatta Center, includes men's and women's singles, doubles and
fours kayaks, and men's singles and doubles canoes. 

The whitewater slalom event will be held at the Penrith
Whitewater Stadium and will feature men's singles kayak, men's
singles and pairs canoe and women's singles kayak.  It is just
the fourth whitewater Olympic competition, as only Munich in
1972, Barcelona in 1992 and Atlanta in 1996 were able to
accomodate it. 

All events begin with heats and the top three finishers in each
heat advance to the semifinals.  The rest compete in a
second-chance round, with the four fastest finishers advancing
to the semifinals.  The nine fastest semifinalists advance to
the final.
