Hamilton proves its world class

In the aftermath of one of the most successful UCI World Road Cycling Championships ever much of the cynicism that pervaded - some would argue impeded - preparations for this prestigious event, has vanished. Pride has replaced skepticism. Without a question Hamilton has proven worthy of hosting world-class events.

    Road world championships in Hamilton finish with a flourish

    An estimated total of 104,000 spectators lined the race route throughout Hamilton as the 2003 Road World Championships concluded on Sunday, October 12 with the Elite Men's Road Race. The total attendance for the six days of racing was estimated to be 230,000. On Saturday, an estimated 67,000 spectators crowded the 12.4 km Road Race course for the Junior Men's and Elite Women's Road Race

    Cycling fans were treated to a day of outstanding racing at the Hamilton 2003 road cycling world championships today, as the junior men and elite women took to the challenging 12.4-kilometre course, which includes two climbs of the Niagara escarpment each lap.

    A View of the Team Boxes

    An hour before the start of the junior road race officials are busy moving equipment and vehicles into place. Four vans bearing the decals of the 2003 World Road Cycling Championships, lie in wait. They will transport accredited photographers around the course, dropping them in locations where the lines of sight are most interesting and then bringing them back in time to shoot the finish.
