Réponses de Will Frischkorn

1 - Greetings Will, Does your excellent performance at the Canadian Nationals help your chances to be selected to the US team for the World Championships? How many American men do you expect to race on the road course and how will they be selected? Can we expect Lance Armstrong and Tyler Hamilton to be racing in Hamilton?) ? (Reggie Dunbar, Calgary, AB)

WF - Reggie, I'm lucky to still be an under 23 rider and have already been selected to the US team. As for the selection of the elite riders much will depend upon which big riders decide to compete. If Lance were to choose to compete much of the team would be picked around him. For now it sounds like Tyler is very focused for the TT, and George for the road race. After that it will be interesting to see who comes. For me the opportunity to ride the Canadian Nationals was a great opportunity to see the course first hand and share that experience with teammates and coaches. Hopefully it will help come October!

    1. Hi Genevieve, you are quite a petite athlete, how do you train hard enough to be as competitive as you are, yet not be injured all the time? Do you ride with some aches or pains most of the season? Also, how do you achieve that explosive power that allows you to break away from your competitors? (Reggie Dunbar, Calgary, AB)

GJ: I have a reputation for training harder than everybody else, but I don't believe it's true. Actually my coach Andre Aubut is very careful to prevent me from overtraining. We focus not so much on the volume of work, but more on the quality of the program. In other words, I don't think I train more than everybody else, but I do think, that, thanks to Andre, I train better than most. I think that the trick is to be very systematic, to do a lot of very specific training, on and off the bike. It requires careful planning, disciplined execution, yet flexibility (because I try and listen to my aches and pains, when I have some). As for the power, well, that's one of the specifics that Andre and I have worked on for several years. A mixture of power rides on the bike, and weight training in the gym. It pays off after a while...

    1. Would training on the World's course in Hamilton provide you with an advantage over the riders who will only see the course in October? Do you plan to train on the Worlds road course between now and the Championships? (Reggie Dunbar, Calgary, AB)

DP: The main advantage is that I raced the Canadian championships on the course already, because hills are always different at race speed and after 180km. Riding it in training doesn't always give you the proper "feeling" of the course. For instance, when I rode it the day before nationals I thought the course was not THAT hard, but it got harder after each km in the race.

One important thing is that now I know the gears I will need for world's: to get into details, I will use 41X 53 in the front and 11-23 at the back. 41 chainring rather than 39 because the hills are not so steep and a 41 is a bit better to keep the chain straight and gives a bit more power. 11X23 because I expect that we might be on the big chainring on the top of the climbs in the last laps, perhaps on 53X21-19, so that way it is best to keep the chain straight.
