Dear Secondary Teacher:
As you are no doubt aware, coming to Hamilton this October 6-12 is an event of unprecedented magnitude: the 2003 Road World Cycling Championships. Our community will play host to 770 athletes from 50 countries around the globe, drawing an estimated 200,000 spectators to our streets and another 350 million TV viewers for one momentous week this fall.
To celebrate this event and generate excitement in the community - particularly among our student population - we have initiated a special student art exhibit. It is our intention that a program like this will help your students who are off school for the week feel a part of the Championships. It will also provide an opportunity for our Hamilton students to showcase their talents and promote the "spirit of cycling".
It is our understanding that this semester's art assignments may, have already been distributed to students. We certainly appreciate the time and planning that is required to prepare these lesson plans. That said, this is an incredible opportunity for your students to have their work prominently displayed throughout the city, and for them to build their portfolios with the Hamilton 2003 Certificate of Excellence.
This package contains detailed sample lesson plans which were designed around a cycling theme. If it is not possible, at this late date, to utilize these lessons, we would kindly ask you to consider adapting your current assignments to have a cycling subject matter; this would still provide your students with the chance to participate in the exhibition. Another option might be to have any interested students work independently on this project.
As you can well imagine, we are operating on a very tight timeline, but remain absolutely committed to the success of this initiative. Given that framework, we must ask that all artwork be completed, mounted and submitted through Board mail by Tuesday, September 30th in order to be included in the exhibition. Larger pieces or sculpture may be dropped off to the World Cycling office.
The World will be at Hamilton's doorstep this fall. We want to showcase the talent and enthusiasm of our community's youth and cannot express how much we appreciate your support in this endeavour. While we realize this is a very busy time of year, sometimes we must grasp these opportunities when they present themselves and so we thank-you again for your special attention in this matter.
Best Regards,
