    Bill Warren

Nominated by the Canadian Olympic Association

Few have given more to the Canadian sport system than Bill Warren. His commitment as a volunteer has touched every aspect of sport. A proven leader over four decades, he has been chosen by his peers to serve as president of the Canadian Olympic Association (COA), the Calgary Olympic Development Association (CODA), and the Calgary Booster Club, and much more. He was a member of the executive committee and a director of the organizing committee for the '88 Calgary Games. Strong leadership, clear direction, and a focus on goals characterize the respected lawyer.

As modest as he is committed, Warren's focus has always been the athlete and how he and the institutions he represents can do more to aid their quest for personal excellence. His successes include leading CODA to focus on direct support to winter sport athletes and their national federations; pushing active athlete involvement in the COA through an athletes' council and a position on the executive board; and leading the charge for greater distribution of COA funds to athletes and coaches.

Under his guidance, athletes gained new facilities for training, better funding, better equipment, and better coaching. His orders to all were to "find innovative ways to provide opportunities to athletes and bridge the gap in geography and delivery of services. If we do so, athletes will thrive and so will we."

As dedicated as he is to Canada's athletes, Warren is also passionate about the theatre, music, ornithology, education, fine dining, and his grandchildren. He is a principled man of conviction. A man of his word who seeks to serve, but never searches out the spotlight. A nationalist without jingoism. A man of dignity, honour, and dedication.
