BRYCE TAYLOR MEMORIAL AWARD for Volunteer Leadership
Patricia Murray
Nominated by the Canadian Interuniversity Athletic Union and the Canadian Association for the Advancement of Women and Sport and Physical Activity
A dedicated, passionate, and innovative sport leader, Patricia Murray has given endlessly of her time and effort to synchronized swimming, field hockey, the Canadian Olympic Association (COA), Ontario University Athletics, and the Canadian Interuniversity Athletic Union (CIAU). Currently director of sport and recreation at York University and a tenured associate lecturer, she began volunteering in sport in 1972. At the same time, she began her coaching career and successfully led the university's synchro and badminton programs to a number of provincial championships.
Inclusive, athlete-focused, and blessed with a development-oriented leadership style, Murray served on the board of Synchro Canada for many years, including a three-year stint as president. She also brought her talents to the coaching committee, the international committee, and the national team management committee. One of the few senior course conductors in the country, she headed synchro delegations to four Olympic Games, including Barcelona '92, where she played a key role in the eventual overturning of the judge's error that cost Sylvie Fréchette her gold medal.
Dedicated to bringing the 2008 Olympic Games to Toronto, Murray is chair of the COA Education Council and a member of the COA's executive committee, strategic planning committee, awards committee, and women in sport task force. She has also served the CIAU in various leadership roles, including vice-president for marketing.
Whatever she undertakes, Murray is a tireless volunteer, always willing to roll up her sleeves and work towards solutions. She is an innovative thinker and doer, recognizing and building on promising ideas. In 2000 her extraordinary talents were recognized with the Athletic Director of the Year Award for North America.
