    Marianne Limpert - Swimming

    Nominated by Swimming Canada Natation

Marianne Limpert is well known as one of Canada's most accomplished swimmers. In her private life, her high ethical standards and outstanding leadership qualities are equally impressive.

On the national team for 11 years, the Fredericton native has been a finalist at three Olympic Games; in 1996, she won the silver medal in the 200m individual medley. Throughout the controversy surrounding gold medallist Michelle Smith of Ireland--two years later she was suspended for manipulating a drug sample during a doping test--Limpert behaved with customary tact, aplomb, and dignity.

An incident at the 2000 Olympic Trials typifies Limpert's character. Qualified in 200m IM, 100m freestyle, and the relay, she also won the 50m freestyle. With only two spots available, third-place finisher Nadine Rolland would not be going anywhere. Seeing Rolland's devastation, the classy Limpert declined the spot without hesitation.

Twice Canada's Female Swimmer of the Year and the winner of Pan American and Commonwealth Games gold medals, Limpert is committed to community service. She is the spokesperson for both the New Brunswick Arthritis Society and Health in Perspective, an anti-smoking program aimed at teenage girls; honorary chair of her home province's Kids Sports Fund for underprivileged children; honorary spokesperson for the New Brunswick Trails Commission and Red Cross Aquaqest program; contributor to the Fredericton Community Shelter; and sponsor of the Marianne Limpert Scholarship for outstanding academic and athletic performance. A finalist for the Gillette World Champion Award, which recognizes commitment to community involvement, she received the Paul Harris Fellowship Award for community involvement from Rotary International.
