FRANK RATCLIFFE MEMORIAL AWARD for Communications
Coaches Report - Canadian Professional Coaches Association
Nominated by the Coaching Association of Canada
Since its launching in 1994, Coaches Report has consistently filled its pages with articles and information of importance to coaches and Canada's sport community as a whole. Honest, informative, provocative, and relevant, the magazine has evolved into the authoritative voice, not just of coaches, but also of leaders in Canadian sport at all levels. A copy is as likely to be found in the boardroom of a national sport federation as in the briefcase of a coach.
Praised for the thoughtful and hard-hitting manner in which it tackles issues, the magazine and its founding editor, Sheila Robertson, who has been writing about amateur sport for 25 years and won the communications award in 1995, do not shy away from dealing with delicate and controversial subjects, from coach and athlete selection to how the sport system fails Canada's athletes.
Through insightful profiles of leading Canadian coaches, Coaches Report highlights their coaching philosophy, discusses the challenges and rewards of the profession, and salutes their successes. To help coaches stay on the leading edge, each issue features a timely article written by a leading sport scientist. Legal advice, ethical issues, a sport psychology feature, an opinion column, and a series presenting the opinions of athletes from the national sport centres are examples of the magazine's commitment to keeping readers abreast of current technology, coaching practices, and social and political issues.
As a communications focal point, Coaches Report provides a collective conscience, a forum, a powerful resource, and an effective vehicle for the celebrations of contribution of coaches to Canada's sport community.
