    Emily Brydon - Alpine Skiing

    Nominated by Alpine Canada Alpin

In her first year on the international circuit, all-event skier Emily Brydon proved she is on course to achieve international success. Recording her first Europa Cup victory last January, the quietly determined 19-year-old skied with an aggressive yet relaxed style to win the slalom event at Rogla, Slovenia. Two weeks later she was the fastest skier on the downhill course at Haus, Austria, edging two formidable Austrians. With the victories, Brydon joined Melanie Turgeon as only the second Canadian woman to win both a slalom and a downhill on the Europa Cup circuit and became only the fourth Canadian woman to post a Europa Cup win. She also earned a world ranking and established herself as a legitimate threat in the four disciplines: downhill, super-G (her favourite), giant slalom, and slalom.

The season's best was yet to come. With the World Junior Championships taking place in Québec, Brydon, ignoring the intense pressure, took full advantage of skiing on home snow. An upset second-place finish in slalom, along with seventh in the downhill and eighth in the giant slalom, gave her the combined title. She is only the second Canadian woman to win gold at the World Juniors.

Brydon, from the East Kootenay town of Fernie, B.C., started skiing when only two years old. She joined the Nancy Greene Ski League at the age of seven and took up racing as an 11-year-old. Her impressive results throughout the 1999/2000 season have proven her readiness to take on the World Cup circuit and augur well for the future of Canada's women's alpine ski team one year out from the Salt Lake Olympics.
