Brunet and Igali repeat as Canadian Athletes of the YearOTTAWA -- Kayaker Caroline Brunet of Lac-Beauport, Que. and wrestler Daniel Igali of Surrey, B.C., were repeat winners of the Athlete of the Year Awards handed out tonight at the 28th annual Canadian Sport Awards. How can one forget Daniel Igali's outstanding and very touching performance in Sydney, where he won Canada's first Olympic gold medal in the sport of wrestling. His obvious love for his adopted country has made him a favourite of sport fans across the country. Brunet, 32, a three-time Velma Springstead Award winner and four-time Olympian was virtually unbeatable throughout 2000. Leading up to the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney, where she won a silver medal in the K-1 500m, she posted four World Cup victories. Diving sensation Alexandre Despatie, was also a repeat winner as he completed a hat-trick and took the Viscount Alexander Award for junior male athlete for the third year in a row. Emily Brydon of Fernie, B.C., only the second Canadian woman to win the World Junior Ski Championships, was honoured with the Elaine Tanner Award, for top junior female athlete. The Tracy Wilson and Rob McCall Trophy for pairs team of the year was awarded to Sydney Olympic Champions in doubles tennis, Sebastien Lareau of Mont-Royal, Que., and Daniel Nestor of Toronto. The Team Trophies, Edmonton Grads for top women of the year, and Dick Ellis for top men of the year, went to the Kelley Law Curling Team, and the Men's Short Track Speed Skating Team respectively. The Johnny F. Bassett Memorial Award for sporting excellence was awarded to Lori Johnstone; the Bruce Kidd Award for athlete leadership went to Hayley Wickenheiser; the Geoff Gowan Coaching Award was presented to Dr. Doug Clement from Athletics; the Frank Ratcliffe Memorial Award for communications was given to Nancy Lee of CBC and the Bryce Tailor Memorial Award for volunteer leadership winner was Bill McEwen of the CGAC. CBC will broadcast the event at 7pm (EST) on March 21st and again at 5pm (EST) on Saturday, March 24th. The Canadian Sport Awards, presented by Investors Group and supported by the Government of Canada through Sport Canada, is managed by the Spirit of Sport Foundation in partnership with the Canadian Centre for Ethics in Sport, Athletes CAN, the Canada Games Council and the Commonwealth Games Association of Canada.
