Tyson's probation modified
INDIANAPOLIS (AP) -- Mike Tyson will be able to travel more freely,
including overseas, under a modification of the terms of his probation, court
records show.
Marion Superior Court Judge Patricia Gifford signed an order this
week modifying Tyson's probation and transferring jurisdiction over the former
heavyweight boxing champion from Ohio authorities to the Marion County
Probation Department.
Tyson, convicted of raping beauty pageant contestant Desiree
Washington in his Indianapolis hotel room in 1991, now will be required to
check in by telephone once a month with Marion County's chief probation
officer, George Walker. His probation is scheduled to continue through March
1999.
Tyson was released from an Indiana prison in March 1995 after serving
nearly three years of a six-year sentence. He also was sentenced to four years
probation.
Tyson will attempt to regain his WBA heavyweight title when he fights
Evander Holyfield on June 28 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. He lost the title
to Holyfield at the same site Nov. 9 when the fight was stopped in the 11th
round.
