Wednesday, November 5, 1997Holyfield to fight Moorer November 8th in Las VegasA unification bout between World Boxing Association heavyweight champion Evander Holyfield and International Boxing Federation champion Michael Moorer is set for November 8th in Las Vegas.Promoter Don King has called a news conference for Wednesday morning in New York to officially announce the bout, which will take place at the Mirage Resort in Las Vegas. The fight will be the first for Holyfield since his infamous bout with Mike Tyson on June 28th, in which Holyfield retained his title when Tyson was disqualified after three rounds for twice biting his foe. Holyfield lost the WBA and IBF titles to Moorer in a 12-round decision on April 22nd, 1994. He regained the WBA crown with his victory over Tyson last November. The victory over Holyfield was the biggest of Moorer's career, but just seven months later, he was knocked out in the 10th round by George Foreman, dropping both belts. Foreman later was stripped of both titles. On June 22nd, 1996, Moorer won a decision over Axel Schulz for the vacant IBF title and has made two successful defenses. Holyfield is 34-3 with 24 knockouts. The loss to Foreman is the only career setback for Moorer, who is 39-1 with 31 knockouts. |
