Lowell's Zigomanis named Player of the Week

 SPRINGFIELD, MA . The American Hockey League announced today that Lowell Lock Monsters center Mike Zigomanis has been named the Sher-Wood AHL Player of the Week for the period ending Sunday, October 21, 2001. In three games, Zigomanis recorded three goals and two assists for five points, along with a plus-5 rating, as Lowell improved to 6-0-0 on the season.

 The 20-year-old Zigomanis scored two goals in Lowell's 8-4 victory at Springfield on Friday, another goal in Saturday's 4-3 win over Manchester, and two assists in the Lock Monsters' 3-2 win over Norfolk on Sunday. The native of North York, Ont., has recorded a point in each of Lowell's six games this season, and he leads all AHL rookies with nine points (five goals, four assists). In recognition of his achievement, Zigomanis will receive a Sher-Wood leather jacket, presented to him during an on-ice ceremony prior to an upcoming game. In addition, Sher-Wood will donate five travel bags to the Tewksbury Youth Hockey Association of Tewksbury, Mass., in Zigomanis's name.

 Zigomanis was a second-round pick (46th overall) of the Carolina Hurricanes in the 2001 NHL Entry Draft. He played four seasons of junior hockey at Kingston of the Ontario Hockey League, totaling 132 goals and 330 points in 240 games.

 Other players nominated for Sher-Wood AHL Player of the Week include Albany right wing Brian Gionta, Bridgeport left wing Raffi Torres, Chicago goaltender Norm Maracle, Cleveland right wing Miroslav Zalesak, Grand Rapids center Kip Miller, Hartford center Jeff Toms, Manchester right wing Dane Jackson, Manitoba goaltender Eric Fichaud, Milwaukee right wing Mark Mowers, Norfolk goaltender Michael Leighton, Portland center Martin Hlinka, Saint John defenseman Alan Letang, Springfield left wing Ryan Tobler, Syracuse goaltender Jean-Francois Labbe, Utah defenseman Greg Hawgood, Wilkes-Barre/Scranton defenseman Peter Ratchuk, and Worcester center Justin Papineau.

 As Sher-Wood AHL Player of the Week, Zigomanis will participate later this week in an on-line chat at the AHL's official web site, theahl.com.
