Jeremy Wotherspoon, a silver medallist in the 500-metres at the 1998 Olympics, re-claimed the world record in the men's
1,000-metres at the world championships in March. He also snared a fourth consecutive World Cup title in the 1,000 and
was second overall in the 500.
Needless to say with such a sparkling competitive record, Wotherspoon feels he has the capabilities for double gold in
Nagano. But that won't be easy. In the 500, defending Olympic champion Hiroyasu Shimizu of Japan is still the man to beat
and came up big again last season at the big events.
In the 1,000, Aadne Sondral of Norway posted four World Cup wins and will be a formidable opponent. Wotherspoon also
needs to worry about teammate Mike Ireland in both events. The two pals have a friendly rivalry going although friendship
will be set aside if both are paired in an Olympic race.
"We're both helping each other to get faster and if we have each other's strengths to work with we're both going to get faster," said
Wotherspoon.
