Canada's women's alpine ski team is best known for its Big Three:
Mélanie Turgeon,
Allison Forsyth and
Emily Brydon. But not far behind is
another young oustanding skier Britt Janyk. Janyk was on the podium six times in Nor Am and Europa Cup races last season, including three
victories. Her giant slalom win at the Europa Cup in Chamonix, France just before Christmas was a first for Canadian on that circuit.
World Cup performances saw Janyk finish eighth (she had fastest second run time in that race) and 18th in her first two giant slalom races in
Europe followed by a strong seventh place finish in the downhill portion of the combined event at the 2001 World Alpine Championships in St.
Anton, Austria. Janyk tweaked her knee in training earlier this season and but was able to compete at the World Cup opener in Austria.
"My Europa Cup win gave me a lot of confidence," said Janyk. "Then my World Cup result in Sestriere proved to me I can ski just as well as any
girl on the tour. It's a great feeling to know I am making progress at the World Cup level and now it's just a matter of continuing to take those
steps forward."
Janyk separated her shoulder in a crash on the Olympic mountain at Snowbasin last season, but she is feeling no effects from that injury and is
anxious to tackle the course again.
She is also a leader in the Whistler ski community, where she often coaches young racers. Her younger brother Michael, 19, is a member of the
National Development Team.
