  Kristina Groves has maintained her ranking among Canada's best middle and long distance racers in long track speed skating for the past several seasons. She captured two gold medals at the 1998 nationals and held the 5,000 metre Canadian record prior to the start of this season. She set that mark with a seventh place finish at the world championships last March in Salt Lake City, her best-ever international result.

  Groves was a competitive cross-country skier, then started speed skating at age 11 after watching the sport on TV at the Calgary Olympics. She's currently studying kinesiology at the University of Calgary and plans to pursue a career in physical education and coaching.
