Lindsay Alcock has plunged head first into her sport and is a serious medal contender in the women's skeleton event which makes its Olympic return after a 54-year absence in 2002. Alcock, who conducted bus tours at Canada Olympic Park only three years ago, won a gold and two bronze medals this season in her World Cup rookie campaign for third place overall. Her victory was at her home track in Calgary in December.

Canadian skeleton riders had three years to earn four top-six finishes and meet the Olympic criteria. Alcock, a former sprinter in track and field at the University of Calgary, accumulated her four results this winter in five races.

"I never expected to do well this season," said Alcock, who competed on the America's Cup developmental circuit last year. "It's been a fast progression. I put my mind to it."

Alcock achieved her Olympic dream with little financial backing besides her parents. She pays for her sled loaned to her by the Rocky Mountain Bobsleigh and Skeleton Club by working during the club's bingo nights.
