BOXING
Heavyweight (91-kg): Mark Simmons, Toronto, def. Rohoulah Houseini, 11-6 on points in opening-round bout.
EQUESTRIAN
Individual Three-Day Event: Wyn St. John, Vancouver, on Oliver, ranked 17th overall after second day, cross-country, portion; Bruce Mandeville, New Westminster, B.C., on Larissa, was 24th overall.
FENCING
Women's individual foil: Jujie Luan, Edmonton, lost 15-8 to Seo Mi-jung in first round, eliminated; Julie Mahoney, Montreal, lost 15-10 to Reka Zsofia Szabo, Romania, in second round.
GYMNASTICS
Women's all-round: Kate Richardson, Coquitlam, B.C., finished 16th in final; Yvonne Tousek, Cambridge, Ont., was 34th.
JUDO
Men's half-heavyweight (100-kg): Nicolas Gill, Montreal, def. lost gold-medal bout to Kosei Inoue, Japan, by Ippon, to win silver medal.
Women's half-heavyweight (78-kg): Kimberly Ribble, Hamilton, suffered knee and foot injuries in first-round bout against Diadenys Luna, Cuba, eliminated.
ROWING
Men's single sculls: Derek Porter, Victoria, finished second in semifinal heat, advanced to final.
Men's pairs: Phil Graham, Corner Brook, Nfld., and Henry Hering, Dorval, Que., placed fourth in semifinal heat, eliminated.
SAILING
Women's Europe (single-handed dinghy): Beth Calkin, West Vancouver, B.C., was 19th overall after four races.
Women's Mistral (sailboard): Caroll-Ann Alie, Gracefield, Que., was 18th overall after eight races.

SHOOTING
Men's 50-metre prone rifle: Wayne Sorensen, Calgary, tied for 10th in qualifying, eliminated from final; Roger Caron, Baie-Comeau, Que., finished in a tie for 38th, eliminated.

Women: Canada lost 4-3 to Japan in 10 innings, dropping to 1-4 in round-robin play.
SWIMMING
Men's 50-metre freestyle: Craig Hutchison, Pointe-Claire, disqualified in heat for false start.
Men's 100-metre butterfly: Michael Mintenko, Moose Jaw, Sask., finished fourth in semifinal heat, advanced to final; Shamek Pietucha, Edmonton, was eighth in heat, eliminated.
