Stadium Australia, when the 2000 Games arrive, will be the largest outdoor venue in modern Olympic history. Located at Homebush Bay in Sydney, the $690 million stadium will seat 110,000 people.
During the Olympics, a continuous lower seating bowl will surround the athletics track, flanked on both sides by two permanent roofed grandstands and by temporary open grandstands at the ends.
The stadium will include 125 private suites, 160 open boxes and dedicated bars, restaurants, banquet and function rooms.
Suspended from a huge arch structure and three hectares in area, the roof is specially designed for the Australian environment.
The major construction material for this giant roof structure will be translucent polycarbonate to minimize the shadows and patches of direct sunlight on the playing area.
