Swimmers celebrated on almost-instant stamp
SYDNEY, Australia (AP) -- Ian Thorpe has something to go along with two gold medals -- his very own postage stamp.
Australia Post said stamps commemorating Australia's first gold medals of the Sydney Games would be available Sunday morning (Saturday night EDT), the day after the world record-setting performances.
Australia's postal agency said Thorpe, the winner of the 400-meter freestyle, and his teammates in the 400 freestyle relay would be the first gold medal athletes to be printed on Olympic stamps.
Australia Post has promised to produce a stamp bearing images of every Australian athlete who wins gold, by midday the day after the medal is won.
David Maiden of Australia Post said stamps bearing the swimmers would go on sale first in Sydney, then in 68 major post offices around the country.
"These are the first of what Australia Post is hoping will be a daily addition to our tally," Maiden said.
