Canadian boxers still in contention at Olympic

BUENOS AIRES (CP) -- Three Canadians are scheduled to enter the ring today, knowing a win will move them within one bout of securing a berth at the Sydney Games.

Benoit Gaudet of Drummondville, Que., (54 kilograms), Winnipeg's Ryan Savage (67 kg) and Scott MacIntosh of Halifax (71 kg) already have one victory under their belts and have reached the semifinals of the third and final Olympic qualifying trials for the Americas. They need to win their weight classes to get to Sydney.

Domenic Filane of Schreiber, Ont., (48 kg) defeated Bolivian Ronald Ribera 10-6 Wednesday night to advance to the semifinals as well. Filane will face Chilean opponent Pedro Cardenas on Friday.

Savage was a late replacement for Jeremy Molitor of Sarnia, Ont., who is out with a hand injury.

Winnipeg's Kent Brown (60 kg) also won his first bout and is due to box again Friday in semifinal action.

Gaudet, a bronze medallist at the world championships last summer, will have to win four bouts to make it to Sydney because of the number of competitors in his class.

Hamilton's Zaya Younan, who subbed for Jesse Laframboise when the Regina native failed to join the team, lost his first bout in the 57-kilogram division.

Canada has already qualified five boxers for Sydney: Andrew Kooner of Tecumseh, Ont., Mike Strange of Niagara Falls, Ont., Don Orr of Victoria, Mark Simmons of Toronto and Artur Binkowski of Waterloo, Ont.
