Savage's Oly dreams buoyed by Internet

By GRANT GRANGER -- Winnipeg Sun

Somebody, or something, seems to be playing tricks with Ryan Savage's dream pattern, specifically his Olympic dream.

When he lost the 67-kilogram final of an Americas Olympic qualifying boxing tournament in Buenos Aires earlier this month he believed it had turned into a pipe dream. Only the gold medallists in Argentina were supposed to go to Sydney in September joining the finalists from each weight category at earlier qualifying tourneys in Florida and Tijuana, Mexico. The sixth Americas' spot was believed to be going to Cuba.

 POSTED LISTS

But on Friday, the Amateur International Boxing Association, the world governing body, posted lists on its Internet site of all the boxers who had qualified for Sydney and Savage's name was on it, as was another Canadian silver medallist in Argentina, Dominic Figliomeni in the 48-kg class. Savage doesn't know if it's a mistake or if it's for real.

"It's kind of frustrating. It's good news in that it keeps the hope alive. If it's not then it's just the same way as it was," said Savage. "It's been kind of surreal waiting for the official word."

When his friend, fellow boxer Mike Strange of Niagara Falls, Ont., phoned to tell him, Savage had his doubts. He still does.

 UNCONFIRMED

"My first thought right away was 'Yeah, I don't know, there are a lot of Internet sites.' But this is the official site of the world governing body and the official list," said Savage. "We contacted Boxing Canada (yesterday) to find out what's going on and they've e-mailed the (AIBA). But all their officials are at a tournament in Kazakhstan."

While he was in Argentina, Savage said he heard rumours of silver medallists getting spots which adds credibility to the possibility he'll be going Down Under. There hasn't, however, been official word to confirm the gossip.

"I'm sitting on pins and needles waiting for the phone to ring," said Savage. "The past month has been an emotional roller-coaster."
