TACOMA, Wash. (AP) -- Jose Navarro's hard-fought victory at 112 pounds highlighted the U.S. Boxing team's final tuneup Tuesday night before next month's Olympic Games.
The U.S. team, which featured alternates in five of the seven matches, came away with a 4-3 win against a Puerto Rico team that featured six Olympians.
Navarro, the youngest member of the U.S. team at 19, won the closest match of the evening, beating Carlos Valcarcel. The judge's score had the two boxers tied at 21 after four rounds so the fight was decided on raw punches thrown, with Navarro holding an 84-64 edge.
The other U.S. Olympian competing Tuesday was Cincinnati's Ricardo Williams Jr., who lost 28-22 to Miguel Cotto at 139 pounds.
Williams came out slow in the first two rounds, allowing Cotto to take a sizable lead. He came out strong to start the third round, nearly knocking Cotto down midway through the round. Williams had Cotto on the ropes in the fourth and final round, but couldn't knock him down.
The card was cut from 11 scheduled matches to seven as Puerto Rico failed to field three boxers. U.S. Olympian David Jackson, a Seattle resident, failed to make weight at 132 pounds, missing by one pound.
Other U.S. winners were Teaunce Shephert at 132 pounds, Walter Wright of Seattle at 147 and heavyweight Michael Wilson.
Karoz Norman and Aaron Garcia lost for the United States at 106 and 119 pounds respectively.
