It was one of the gutsiest performances in recent Canadian boxing history. Don Orr despite a broken right thumb defeated Jerson Ravelo of the Dominican Republic in the semifinal at the first Olympic trials in Tampa to earn a berth for the Sydney Games

  The thumb had swelled to about three times its normal size after he injured it in his previous bout, in which he rallied to win after trailing by four points with 30 seconds left. Following the competition in Tampa he underwent successful surgery.

  Orr began boxing at his father's club in Victoria at age eight and entered his first bout-which he lost-at 12. At 19, he took two years off to work in the oil fields in Alberta before resuming his career again. Earlier this year at the Canadian boxoffs in Halifax he defeated national champion Cody Kelly twice to knock him off the Canadian team.

  "He's noted for is his quick left jab and left hook," said Don Orr Sr., a former western Canadian champion. "He can pull off a triple left jab with good authority. He has more of a professional style but he's been able to adapt to the computer scoring."
