 Talent and hard work have always been Joanne Malar's trademarks in the swimming pool. However, she has a new weapon in her arsenal. Experience. Malar learned the hard way what the pressure cooker life of being Canada's Olympic team covergirl in 1996 was all about.

 The stress got the best of her and she posted a subpar performance at the Games although she did place fourth in the 2001 M, won by now suspended Michelle Smith of Ireland. However in April 1998, after contemplating retirement, she made a successful transfer from Hamilton to Calgary's national sports centre under coach Jan Bidrman who has re-ignited Malar's competitive fire.

 For the 2000 Olympics, Malar is aware that medal hopes for her are high and she has certainly set the stage for a successful 2000 Olympics.

 The 27-time national champion had a colossal season in 1999. She was ranked number-one in the world in the 200 individual medley and number two in the 400 IM. She won gold in both events at the Pan Am Games and a month later at the Pan Pacific Championships in Austrailia. A gold though is far from automatic for Sydney. She can expect tough battles from Ukrainian teen sensation Yana Klochkova, Japan's Yasuko Tajima and her own teammate Marianne Limpert of Fredericton.

Sept. 20: Women's 800-metre freestyle relay: Marianne Limpert, Fredericton; Shannon Shakespeare, Winnipeg; Joanne Malar, Hamilton; Jessica Deglau, Vancouver, finished fifth in final.
Sept. 19: Women's 200-metre individual medley: Joanne Malar, Hamilton, was fifth.
Sept. 18: Women's 200-metre individual medley: Joanne Malar, Hamilton, finished second in semifinal heat, advanced to final; Marianne Limpert, Fredericton, was third in semifinal heat, advanced. Sept. 16: Joanne Malar, Hamilton, finished seventh in final.
