Triathlete will run in 10,000

By DAVE FULLER -- Toronto Sun

SYDNEY -- Canada's hard-luck triathlete, Carol Montgomery, will race in the women's 10,000-metre heats tomorrow after all.

Montgomery, the only Canadian woman to qualify in two sports at the same Olympic Games, suffered a broken wrist and severe body lacerations while competing in the women's triathlon nine days ago.

The 34-year-old Montgomery was unable to avoid a crash immediately in front of her during the cycling portion of the triathlon -- knocking her out of contention. She was one of the medal favourites entering the triathlon, having won World Cup races in Toronto and Brazil earlier this year.

"She definitely says she is going to race (in the 10,000)," Athletics Canada team manager Carole Gemer said last night. "I just spoke with her and she's feeling much better. She's definitely planning on running."
