 SYDNEY- Bruny Surin's time in the 100-metre walk was 50.94.

 The gun went off in the 100 metre semifinal and Surin knew he was shot at about the 10-metre mark.

 He walked the rest of the way.

 As a result, he ended up with an official time of 50.94.

 He might as well have stayed in bed and taken a DNS beside his name.

 With Donovan Bailey pulling the parachute in the second heat and Surin failing to fire in the semi-final, Canada was left without representation in the 100-metre final.

 And Surin says it would take "a miracle'' for him to be in the 4 x 100 relay. Bailey is no better than 40-60. Go, Canada, go.

 "I felt it right away,'' said Surin of the ligament he first tweaked at the Canadian championships in Victoria.

 "It was a tough decision to race. But I went for it. I didn't want to have any regrets. Unfortunately it didn't work.''

 Surin said he knew the reality when he came to the track.

 "It would have been a miracle for me to have run the race.''

 It now will be a miracle, quote-unquote, he suggests, if he runs the relay.

 Now there's a situation. Last year at the Seville 1999 Worlds Surin and Bailey battled over who would run the last leg and the team made a mess of it. Now neither one of them is likely to run.

 "I don't think I'll make it,'' said Surin.

 Unlike Bailey, Surin says he'll be in Edmonton to close out his career at the World Championships In Athletics. Bailey wasn't so sure.

 "From now I'm just going to try to focus on getting healthy and running next year.''
