No walk in the park
By TERRY JONES -- Edmonton Sun
SYDNEY - If you don't walk the walk, there's not much talk to talk.
Arturo Huerta of Toronto and Tim Berrett of Edmonton walked the 20-kilometre walk to finish in 25th and 27th place respectively.
Robert Korzeniowski of Poland won gold, and Noe Hernadez of Mexico took the silver.
Vladimir Andreev of Russia took the bronze.
Huerta was six minutes and 25 seconds behind the leader, while Berrett was six minutes and 30 seconds behind.
The only positive to report for Canada is that Berrett didn't deposit his breakfast at any prime location, like right on the finish line like he did when he finished 10th in the 50 kilometre walk at the Atlanta Olympics.
Huerta, who saw himself as a contender, was more than a little disappointed.
Berrett was using the race as a warm-up for next week's 50 kilometre. And it was a warm-up.
Expecting cool weather to walk in in Sydney, it's been hot here ever since the Olympics began.
"It was like the weather was when we were training up in Brisbane. There was no shade out there.''
The 20-kilometre is Huerta's event. He finished second at the Commonwealth Games in Kuala Lumpur.
"I'm not too happy,'' he said.
"I thought I could be top eight here.
"I've competed very well this year. It just didn't work out today. Maybe next year in Edmonton,'' he said of the World Championships In Athletics.
Huerta had to walk hurt for most of the race.
"There was pushing and shoving on the third lap,'' he said.
"I got hit on the leg. I have no idea who it was.''
Berrett said he intentionally held back at the start but, in the end, he wished he'd held back more.
"I was about 40th halfway through and started to pick people off,'' he said.
"I think I would have done better if I'd started slower. That sounds weird.
'`But I think it would have worked that way.
'`Anyway it was a pretty good workout for next week.''
